Veluwsche stoomtreinmaatschappij (VSM)

(Veluwe Steam Train Company)

Veluwe Steam Train Company operates a standard gauge line over some 22 km in Gelderland, the central province of the Netherlands. For a very full description, including time tables and fares, see Rian van der Borgt's excellent Dutch Rail Museum pages.
The VSM is the most sophisticated preserved railway that I visited in the Netherlands. They have a number Deutsche Bahn class 50 and 52 locos along with a number of tank engines. They also have a number of ex Netherlandse Spoorwegen Diesel locos.
They have a selection of rolling stock and were running a mixture of old German 4 Wheeled carriages and a pre-war Netherlandse Spoorwegen bogie carriage as a buffet car.
The line runs between main line stations Apeldoorn and Dieren which can give rise to some ancient and modern occurrences
On all the un-gated level crossings the Guard or the second man on the locomotive get down with a red flag and stop the traffic so the train can cross.
As with all the lines the buffet car is very popular and not expensive, in fact on all the lines coffee and beer were the same price or cheaper than the local cafes!!
