Stichting Stadskanaal Rail (STAR)

(Stadskanaal Rail Foundation)

The Stadskanaal Rail Foundation operates a standard gauge line over some 26 km in Groningen, It is the NorthEast of the Netherlands. For a very full description, including time tables and fares, see Rian van der Borgt's excellent Dutch Rail Museum pages .
STAR. started operating three years ago using a museum train bought from Germany. They currently have two six coupled tank engines. One is serviceable while the other is undergoing repairs.
The rolling stock consists of 4 wheeled carriages again pre-war Deutsche Bahn stock. These have all been rebuilt.
One of the cars is fitted out as a buffet car, getting its power from small petrol generator carried in a box car running behind the train. A bit of sound insulation would hep here!! the generator noise can be quite annoying.
They have a new workshop built near the station at Stadskanaal. Here they are in the process of re-building the station buildings as well as re-laying some of the permanent way to make a better run-round.
